Gary Cullum reports on the build-up to newsawards 2019 and the new judging criteria for the hotly contested Printer of the Year accolades

Newsawards 2019, the 23rd annual celebration of the finest print, business and digital excellence, is now open for entries.

The news media industry’s biggest night iof the year takes place on 8 May next year at the Royal Lancaster London, and all 2018 sponsors have already signed up to ensure their role in the glittering event.

There is no time to lose if you plan to be part of the celebrations - especially if you hope to triumph in the prestigious Printer of the Year category where the traditional entry criteria have been changed significantly to ensure the fairest possible playing field for all contestants.

The majjor change will see the 2019 awards team choose the publication dates for which newspaper copies must be submitted so that true commercial production runs are entered that reflect the regular print-run quality accurately.

All print plants in the UK and Ireland will be conbtacted over the next month with more details of the new entry criteria. Entrants will then have until Monday 7 January to throw their hat in the ring for the coveted newsawards’ National and Regional Printer of the Year titles.

Hopefulls will be able to submit up to two newspaper titles printed over three days - or three weeks ion the case of weekly or weekend titles - between Tuesday 1 January and Tuesday 5 February 2019.

One copy of each title from each applicable date should be put aside in readiness for the final submission dates, which will be annoiunced by the awards team on wednesday 30 January.

“Printers then have just a couple of days in which to send their entries to the awards office in Hemel Hempstead,” explained newsawards director Gary Cullum.

“That’s a maximum of six individual newspaper copies.

“And, for the first time, a written summary of up to 300 words may be included if you believe extra information is needed to enhance your application.”
